Statement on the passing of Chief Larry Byrnes

This week, I joined my fire & EMS family to say goodbye to, and celebrate the life of, Chief Larry Byrnes. He dedicated over 50 years to our community, first volunteering with Fayetteville in 1972 and rising through the ranks before being appointed Chief in 2001. He held that position for ten years and was highly respected, and there are not enough words to express how much he meant to our community.

When I was first elected Mayor, Larry was Chief, and there was nothing more assuring than knowing he was there to back up and support me and the members of our fire department, as well as our community in their time of need. Personally, I could count on him to always be available to talk with and I knew I’d get his honest opinion. Larry had such vast experience, not only in the fire service, but in life, business and family matters, and he was always there when I needed him.

One of the most valuable things Larry taught me was to not always react right away. I can still hear him saying, Mark, in 24 hours if you feel the same way as right now, then go ahead and respond. Often, immediate responses can create further problems and unneeded stress. Whether it is an email or an in-person interaction, always take time to think and fully consider the situation before reacting. This is something I’m still doing today, thanks to Larry.

To his wife Maggie, his children Tim, Erin and Ted, and the whole Byrnes family: My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I want to thank you for sharing Larry with our community for all these years. His leadership, his mentorship, and his experience are going to be missed in our community, and I like so many others are blessed for having known him.
