Teal Ribbon Run is May 17th

On May 5th, I joined others in painting a teal line down the center of North Main Street in the Village of Minoa.

Teal is the color of ovarian cancer awareness, and the line is a visible reminder that this year’s Teal Ribbon Run/Walk is coming up soon. It’s planned for Saturday, May 17th.

The race is now in its 17th year and is put on by the Hope for Heather organization.  It’s always a pleasure to see Frieda and Gary Weeks. They founded the organization in honor of their daughter, Heather, who passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 24.

Women of all ages are at risk for ovarian cancer, and the risk increases with age. Early detection is key, so knowing the symptoms and getting tested is critical.

Symptoms include:

  • bloating
  • pelvic or abdominal pain
  • trouble eating or filling full quickly
  • feeling the need to urinate urgently

Perhaps the most important thing for women to know is the importance of listening to your body.  If something seems off or unusual, and doesn’t go away, make an appointment to see your doctor.  Ask them specifically about ovarian cancer and discuss any risk factors, especially a family history of breast, colon or ovarian cancer.  As mentioned, early detection is key. The Teal Ribbon Run/Walk is May 17th at Lewis Park in Minoa.  The event starts at 9 am, with the 5K run and 3K walk starting at 10 am. Awards are at 11:30 am.
